This position will provide functional detailed checking of comprehensive plant and pipeline facility drawings for detail completeness, design accuracy, operational integrity, and conformance to applicable codes, engineering designs and specifications, company standards and procedures and property accounting unit classifications, in an assigned section (i.e., electrical, mechanical, CAD) of the engineering department.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)
Verify all engineering design information criteria, i.e., dimensions, layout, physical arrangement, piping specifications, material specifications, operational complexities, etc.
Responsible for code conformance. Codes are: DOT 192, DOT 193, DOT 195, ANSI B:31.1, B:31.3, B:31.8, ASME guide NFPA 70, OSHA 19:10, ASTM specifications, CRSI specifications, all incorporated specifications, state and other regulatory agencies. A comprehensive knowledge, usually 5-10 years practical experience, in plant piping and control systems, their application and operational considerations, etc. is mandatory.
Validates designer calculations, graphic representations, property unitization classification, bills of materials, engineering specification details, etc.
May occasionally be requested to assume some management responsibilities and activities when assigned, i.e., project planning and scheduling, staff work directions, field trips, vendor drawing revisions, conferences and CAD system.
Approves and signs all project drawings indicating the drawing is accurate, complete and complies with all specifications, procedures and standards and submits to project engineer for final review, approval and implementation. Exercises judgment for highest quality levels for each drawing and project. Ascertains and helps resolve conflicts with construction on-site personnel, revises drawings in accordance with redirected requirements.
Assists in training of designers, senior and lead designers and/or 3rd party designers regarding drafting techniques, design applications and procedure requirements, company procedures, etc.
Analyzes basic engineering designs, i.e., flow sheets, process and instrumentation diagrams, mechanical diagrams, engineering sketches, etc. and insures that the design drawings applicationally conform. Coordinates resolution of discrepancies with engineers.
Assembles as-built data package verifying the final construction drawings and documentation information such that the engineered project and constructed project meet all requirements and specifications. Disseminates all permanent documents for records storage.
Prepares material requisitions for project materials when assigned.
Maintains mastery of engineering aids, i.e., handbooks, catalogs, manuals, etc.
Utilizes CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) equipment to create drawings: (a) analyzes inputs to determine how to optimize software usage; (b) writes applicable procedure and trains staff; (c) performs mathematical calculations - communicating specific coordinates and axial rotations (3 dimensional); (d) maintains records - downtime logs, output proficiencies, etc.
Gives work direction to third-party designers assigned to projects.
Assists with the maintenance, creation of, editing and deletion of design and records process manual.
